Buying a Moped Scooter Online

It’s Scooter Moped Time!  For most of the country, the weather is beginning to get mild, gas prices are going up again, you are trying to do your part to clean up the environment. So, What do you do? Why, you buy a scooter or moped of course.

Let’s clear up a few terms first. Most people interchange the terms scooter and moped. Actually, a moped is a pedal and gas powered bike that is under 50 cc’s. What makes it a moped is the pedals. You can pedal start a moped or some of the newer mopeds also have electric starts. Mopeds use 2 stroke engines which means you mix the oil right in with the gas. Some states have a problem (California) with the 2 stroke engine. Some moped companies have started installing a “clean carb” that can pass California’s stringent clean air laws.

Most Scooters on the other hand, have a 4 stroke engines. You will find some 2 stroke scooters out there, but please know, they are not as quiet or powerful as the 4 stroke.  They are either kick start, or electric start. A scooter is a bit larger than a moped and you will need a drivers license to drive it.  Both scooters and mopeds have to be registered in the state that you are going to drive it.

That said, So, You want a scooter and you want it now. It is very difficult to find scooter dealers in most parts of the country. That really leaves you to purchasing online. I know. That can be really scary. It seems everybody and his brother is selling scooters online. Throw in a google search for motor scooters, gas scooters, moped scooters, etc… and you will come up with more sites than you can look at. Some of these sites are selling everything from moped/scooters to nail polish remover. Not what you want.

Here are a few tips on buying a moped/scooter online. First, check out a few sites. Dig through them thoroughly. Check to see if there is a contact page. No contact page, time to move on. Next, check out the scooters on the site. If you see something you like check to see if it is available. If it is, YEAH!! Don’t get too excited yet. You have a lot more work to do. Check out the warranties offered on the scooters. Read all the information.  Remember, most of these scooters are coming from China. If you need warranty work, well you want your company to honor that. I don’t think you want to pack up your scooter and send it back to China!  Check to see if the company carries parts for your scooter. Things do break and you will need to have replacement parts available. It is surprising how many scooter sites do not sell parts. Trouble, Trouble! Don’t Order. Even if you think you have found the cheapest price on a moped/scooter. If you can’t get parts, no price is worth it.

Check the site for information that you will need. How will your scooter will be delivered? Will you have to pick it up at a central delivery area? Will the driver help you get it off the truck? (Some delivery services are not responsible for getting it OFF the truck, only to get it to the end of the gate of the truck.)  A Moped Scooter weighs between 200 and 300 lbs. Most come packed in a large box. A little unwieldily for one person.  Some sites offer home delivery for about $50 more than the regular delivery price. Might be worth it.  This is really important! No matter where your motor scooter is delivered-open it. Check every inch of it for damage. Your delivery service may not appreciate it but they do have to wait. Even if they scream at you, do not sign off on your scooter until you have checked it. If there is damage, you need to note that on the delivery paperwork. Get a copy.  If you do not check for damage before the delivery guy leaves, you are out of luck. Seriously, Do Not Sign Off On The Delivery Until You Check For Damage!! If there is damage, you will file claim with the delivery company. This is why it is so important.

Missing pieces, tech issues, should be referred to the company that you bought it from. Shipping damage, to the shipping company.

Check that the company that you are ordering your scooter from gives you clear directions on how to uncrate your moped or scooter, and how to put it together. Most mopeds and scooters require some assembly. Not much, and you should be able to handle it, but you will need clear instructions.

If you are new to mopeds and scooters, it would be a good idea to take a motorcycle safety class. After all, you would not turn over your car keys to someone who had never learned to drive. Above all, wear a helmet!! A full face helmet is the best, but if you don’t want to do that, at least wear a smaller DOT approved (Department of Transportation) helmet. Remember, most accidents happen within the first few months of ownership.

One last bit of advice: Check out the company you are thinking of buying from at the Better Business Bureau online. You can learn a lot. There is one online scooter company out there that has an F rating. I don’t think you want to deal with them.

Scooter Insurance-Better Have It

“I Am only driving to work”, “I only ride it on the weekends…at the cottage..to the office, down the block, just the kids ride it, what could happen??

If any of these things sound familiar, you need to get over it and get yourself some scooter/moped insurance. Any idea how much it costs to repair a scooter? Any idea how much to replace if stolen? How about hospital bills? Be realistic now. Can you really afford to NOT have scooter/moped insurance? The answer is a big fat NO!

Let me tell you a little story. Brand new Tomos Moped, Beautiful Summer Night. Helmet on, (Thank the Good Lord)

out for a ride around the neighborhood. Bam, out of the blue some guy hits me from behind. I go flying, he keeps going. Laying on the side of the road, quite bloody, and the guy keeps going. Unbelievable!! Anyway, someone saw me and called an ambulance.

To make a very long story short, torn ligaments in knee, no skin on three fingers of right hand, road rash so deep on my shoulder, I thought it took the tattoo right off. Helmet trashed. It did its job and absorbed the impact of the crash.

I had insurance, which ironically, I had just purchased that day. The insurance covered the $4000+ in medical bills and came out the next day to check out the moped. They totaled it and I had a check within 2 weeks.

Can you see how different this scenerio would be with no insurance(and no helmet) I would have been in debt four grand and had no moped. Don’t be stupid. The insurance is a bargain. Check out a few companies. Find what works for you and buy it. I will tell you, it is hard to find companies that insure scooters/mopeds. Here is a link below to one of them.

Peace always. Happy scooting, be safe, have insurance, and wear a helmet.

Scooter Helmets-Yes!, You Should Wear One!

A Case For Wearing A Motorcycle Helmet When You Ride A Scooter or Moped.

Jafrum.com-Get DOT Approved Helmets Here-Really Cool Scooter Jackets Too!

No one ever thinks they are going to be in an accident. Everyone believes that it can’t happen to them. You are pushing your luck if you truly believe this. Wearing a helmet whether you are on a Harley or a Moped is the SMART thing to do. It is covering and protecting the part of your body that allows you to make this decision. Your Brain.

Much has been written and discussed about wearing helmets and helmet laws. There are strong arguments for and against. Not necessarily smart arguments-just strong. If you go through the pros and cons honestly, I don’t think you can really make an argument for not wearing a helmet while driving a motor scooter.

motor scooters and mopeds are really just small motorcycles. You drive them in traffic and your visibility, compared to a car is low. Strike one. While most drivers on the road try to pay attention, there are so many distractions that anyone riding a moped or moped scooter on the road needs to be very, very aware of themselves and the surrounding cars. Strike two. Cell phones and text messaging have no business taking drivers attention away from the road, but they do. Distracted driving is fast becoming the main reason for accidents.

I would never drive my car without a seat belt, so why would I drive my gas scooter without a helmet. It is substantial protection for my precious head and brain. God forbid you are ever hit, but if you are, you are protected. Most broken bones can heal, the same can not be said for your brain.

O.K. Just a few more things about helmets. Make sure the helmet you are buying is DOT approved. The Department of Transportation regularly tests helmets for impact  resistance. The hard foam inside of the helmet is the part that will save your head. Usually there is a liner over this for comfort. The foam part of the helmet should be in great shape. No cracks, No dents. If it has cracks or dents, return it. It has been compromised. This is the “bumper” of the helmet, if you will. This part of the scooter or moped helmet absorbs the impact, so your head doesn’t. Next, make sure your helmet fits properly. Put the helmet on, buckle the chin strap, and try to pull it off by reaching your hand over the top of the helmet and grabbing the back. If the scooter or motorcycle helmet slides, it does not fit you. Try a different size or brand.

A full face helmet will offer you the most protection while riding your moped scooter. It will cut down the wind noise so you will be better able to hear traffic. It will protect your eyes from road crud, and it will protect you face and neck if you were to have an accident.

If you don’t want the full face mask, there are modular helmets that cover the head and part of the face. . Some have a half eye shield that flips up and down to protect your eyes.

Finally, there is the “shorty” motorcycle or scooter helmet.  Be careful here. Some companies sell  the shorty as a novelty helmet. You do not want this. You want a DOT approved shorty. It will protect the area of your head that it covers. There are plenty of shorty moped, scooter, and motorcycle helmets that are DOT approved. Make sure your
helmet is.

Make your own decision about whether to wear a helmet while riding your gas scooter, electric scooter, moped scooter or scooter motorcycle, but remember, it is not a decision you can take back. You don’t want to have an accident and then be thinking..”I shoulda…woulda..coulda ” . Oh, wait. You might not be “thinking” at all. Sorry to be harsh, but that is reality.
Peace always. Be Safe. Watch For the Other Guy. Wear a Helmet, And Buy Your Friend One Too!

How To Choose The Best Scooter For You

In the world of Scooters and mopeds, there are millions of choices. (Well, maybe not millions, but a lot) Before you buy a scooter or moped, you should give some thought to a few simple things.

How much do you weigh? Your scooter will ride better is you follow the weight restrictions for that particular brand of scooter. Are you going to ride with a passanger? Again, check the weight restrictions. The closer you get to the max weight of the scooter, the slower it will be.

How and where are you going to ride your scooter. Are you using it for commuting? Are you traveling just a short distance doing errands? Are you planning on taking your scooter on  long driving trips?

If you are primarily commuting with your scooter, you want something responsive. A moped scooter that handles well in traffic. You want a motor scooter that will stop quickly. You probably want something that you can park easily. So a gas scooter that is of medium build with disc brakes should do real well. Maybe you could do with a stand up scooter. If you need to carry things with you, you would do well with the ride on gas scooter.

If you are using your moped scooter for quick, short errands, or just getting around town, than you could look into the medium sized electric scooters. Great for short trips, light weight, and rechargable.

A few companies sell what they call the touring scooter. It is much larger, can hold two people, has a larger engine so it is faster, and it usually has a lot more extras. i.e. MP3 player, windscreen, luggage rack, locking forks, …Keep in mind though, you will pay significantly more for this type of scooter.

What ever you reason for getting a scooter, think about all of the above points, do your research, purchase wisely, wear a helmet and have fun.
